I am overjoyed to finally share the exciting news – I have been accepted into pharmacy school! The path to this moment has been filled with challenges, perseverance, and a fair share of ups and downs, but the result is more than worth the effort.
The Journey:
The journey began with the submission of five applications, leading to four interviews, receiving three acceptances, landing on one waitlist, and facing one inevitable denial. The rollercoaster of emotions during this process was both draining and invigorating.
Each acceptance brought its own set of emotions, but nothing could beat the thrill of securing a spot at my top-choice school. What's more, the admissions committee was not only impressed with my application but also awarded me a $40,000 scholarship from the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. It was a dream come true!
Representation Matters:
As I navigate this transition into pharmacy school, I reflect on the broader picture of representation in healthcare. Recently, in my "Data Analytics for Health Care Managers" lecture, Dr. Lee shared eye-opening statistics on the racial and ethnic makeup of professionals in various healthcare fields.
The figures revealed that Black doctors make up only 4% of the medical field, while Black pharmacists constitute a mere 7% of the profession. These numbers underscore the importance of diverse representation in healthcare, and I am proud to contribute to increasing that representation.
Full Circle Moment:
My journey into pharmacy feels like a full circle. Pursuing a Master's in Public Health, I was presented with statistics that emphasized the need for increased diversity in healthcare professions. Pharmacy, in particular, stood out to me.
Why Pharmacy?
My decision to pursue a career in pharmacy has roots in my undergraduate background in chemistry and over five years of experience working in both retail and long-term care pharmacy as a technician. Feeling a sense of stagnation in my career, I decided to take a bold step forward and advance my career in pharmacy.
Looking Ahead:
As I embark on this new chapter, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities that lie ahead. I am excited to contribute to the field of pharmacy, make a positive impact on patient care, and be a part of the ongoing efforts to enhance diversity in healthcare.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey so far. I can't wait to see where this new adventure takes me!
